Rules
There are three rounds in this competition (Speed Round, General Round, and Team Round). All rounds are in order of increasing difficulty.
Allowed Materials
In all AMT events, you may not use notes, books, calculators, or any other computational aids. Graph paper, protractors, rulers, compasses, and communication devices such as laptops and cell phones are also prohibited. (Basically, you bring pencils and erasers and we’ll supply paper.)
Answer Formatting and Grading
All answers must be simplified. There is NO partial credit. Rational numbers must be expressed in simplest form. Write parentheses for ordered pairs, write angles in degrees, and use correct interval notation. Radicals must be simplified and all answers should be expressed in base 10 unless otherwise specified. When you write your answers more clearly, we are able to grade the tests quicker and more efficiently. Any decisions made by the Head Grader are FINAL.
Team Formations
Each team can have a maximum of 4 students from grade 8 or below. No exceptions. Individuals who wish to participate in the Team Round will be put on teams with other individuals.
Speed Round
The speed round consists of 25 questions (50 points total). This round is 40 minutes long and harder problems will be worth more points than easier problems.
General Round
The general round consists of 15 problems (50 points total). This round is 40 minutes long and harder problems will be worth more points than easier problems.
Team Round
The team round consists of 10 problems (200 points total). This round is 50 minutes long and harder problems will be worth more points than easier problems.
Appeals
During the lunch break, answer keys will be posted. If a contestant believes that an answer from the answer key is incorrect, they can submit an appeal form. In an appeal form, you must write your name, the name of your team, your solution to the problem that you believe our answer is incorrect, and your final answer. Decisions made by the Head Grader are final.
Scoring
For each individual round, only the top 3 individual scores in a team count towards the overall team score. The total score for a team is calculated by adding the speed, general, and team round scores.
Speed Round - 50 points (150 points per team)
General Round - 50 points (150 points per team)
Team Round - 200 points
The maximum score for a team is 500 points.
Liability
From attending AMT, all contestants agree to respect the facility and all others at the event. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. A release form must be signed for each competitor.
Photos will also be taken at AMT. If you have concerns regarding photos of your child being taken, please email us at ahsmathtournament@gmail.com, and we do try to best accommodate your requests.
Awards
Awards will be distributed based on top individual and team scores.
The top 3 overall highest-scoring teams after combining both individual and team round scores will receive awards.
The top 10 individual scorers in each individual round (Speed Round and General Round) will be recognized at the closing ceremony, and the top 3 individual scorers for each of these rounds will receive awards.
The top 5 highest-scoring teams for the team round independently of their members’ individual scores will also be recognized at the closing ceremony but will not receive awards.
